Sylvia is a show relating a woman to a dog. There was a controversy at the onset of the play among women who felt it undermined the girl child. According to A. R. A middle-aged man, Greg finds a stray dog in the park and takes it to his house to be with Kate, the wife. Sylvia is the dog, in the theatre, the role is played by a human. The house is empty by the time of arrival. When Kate finally arrives, she out rightly develops a dislike for Sylvia. Fortunately, Greg and Sylvia are inseparable. Greg and Kate agree to host Sylvia for a few more days before they make a decision of her departure or stay. The presence of Sylvia in the house builds tension between Kate and Greg. Kate and Greg are fond of each other creating a rift in his marriage to Kate. Meanwhile, Sylvia and Kate are fighting the battle of supremacy for Greg. Once day when Greg visits the dog run, he meets a stranger who advises him on how to handle the two women. This leads to Greg sterilizing Sylvia; despite the pain, she still has an undying love for her. A friend to Kate visits and gets repulsed by the interaction between Greg and Sylvia, when she finally leaves the house the song “every time I say goodbye’ is sung by the trio.
Leslie comes in the picture as a therapist visited by Greg and Kate. The therapist meets the two at different intervals. She acts as both male and female depending on her patient’s mental state. Immediately her session with Greg ends, she tells Kate to kill Sylvia using a gun to mean, “I hope you get her right between the eyes.”
